Half of the World's primates are in Danger!

Or Endangered (sorry I had to get your attention)

(A Yellow-Tailed woolly monkey from Peru)

According to a recent report by a major conservation group almost half the world's primate population faces extinction (that includes monkeys!).

Of the worlds 634 primates species - 48% are threatened by extinction. Mainly due to deforestation, illegal trade of these animals, and commercial bush meat hunting.

The main species who seem to be the most threatened include apes, lemurs and monkeys!

Welcome Lara and Lucy!

Hello Lara and Lucy!

Lara and Lucy (pictured above) are two emperor tamarin monkey twin who were born in early July. The sad news is that their mother died from cancer on July 30th just three weeks after they were born. This made Lara and Lucy orphans - so sad. But the Denver Zoo stepped in and decided they would take them in and take care of them.

I'm sorry Lara and Lucy that your mother died. But there are monkeys out there (like me) that will look after you.

Let me know if there is anything I can do for you! (Denver Zoo - you can let me know too)

A Political Attack - From Above

(Video from YouTube)

Yet another story of monkeys not really doing the right thing. I know nothing of Zambian president Rupiah Banda, but during one of his recent press conference, a monkey urinated on him from an above tree. We don't know whether or not the monkey was invited, but nonetheless - this is no way to treat a political official.

I know what its like to oppose a political official (I did run for President), but if we are to be respected as primates and treated as equals this is no way to act. I understand why this monkey did it, but I would hope we could find a more constructive means of sharing our political points of view.

Stay Young with the Monkey Diet!

(Picture via NY Times)

Hi Everybody - Say hello to Canto (left, age 27) and Owen (right, age 29). Scientists at the University of Wisconsin have been studying these two Rhesus monkeys to see if diet controls the aging process.

For 20 years Canto has been on a restricted diet and Owen has been free to eat whatever he wants! They believe that by limiting Canto's calories to 1/3rd of Owen's that they have proven a link between aging and diet.

So if you eat better you will look younger (though Owen looks a bit happier if you ask me).

People are now wondering if this kind of diet control would work on humans - because everyone wants to stay young! - Click Here

More from the NY Times - Click Here

This all sounds pretty good. I wish they would pay me to see what the aging effects are on a monkey (or person) who lives in Disneyland!

Presidential PROOF!

As I have been reporting lots of Monkey News (and other non-human primate news) has been coming out. Most of it trying to paint monkeys in a bad light (probably dim), but here is an article that could have helped me when I ran for President!

Check out the Story: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/02/090202174958.htm

It turns out that a study has found at chimps are awesome at politics. I knew I would have made a good President!

Monday Monkey News: Monkey Plans - We STRIKE after Lunch!

The latest effort to bash non-human primates: this latest story talks about a chimp in Sweden named Santino (pictured above and at the bottom). Apparently he is locked up in a Zoo there and spends his mornings collecting rocks and other items to throw at humans who come to point and laugh at him.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090309/ap_on_sc/eu_sci_sweden_angry_chimp

Although I do not agree with Santino's use of weapons and violence against the humans - I can certainly understand it. I mean how would you feel if someone locked you up so they bring in their friends to come and point and laugh at you? You would probably throw stuff at them eventually.

SO LET SANTINO FREE SWEDEN! You are on my watch list!

Second, they are using this story to show how angry chimps are in relation to Travis! They mask the story as a story to show how chimps are such good planners; because he plans for his attack on the humans by gathering his weapons in the morning. The conspiracy grows.

Bye Everybody

Monday Monkey News - MonkeyGate

Hi everybody - It seems that the trouble with Travis has caused an uproar in Congress. Certain people have decided to take this opportunity to outlaw the transportation of monkeys (and other primates) across state lines!

see - http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/111_HR_80.html

Just because one chimpanzee went bananas it doesn't mean that all primates should be punished. It seems to me that maybe foul play or something like that was involved. The owner gave Travis Xanex and Tea before the incident. Regardless - should all monkeys be punished just because of a bad incident?

I'm not criticizing humans, but every time I watch the news there is at least one story about humans killing other humans and other bad things. Should we pass a law like the "Captive Primate Safety Act" aka the "Monkey Bite Bill", and prevent humans from crossing state borders?

Also as Representative Rob Bishop from Utah said - how would a law against monkeys traveling across borders prevent an incident like the one involving Travis? He didn't cross any borders to go crazy! Sounds like some monkey-hating people decided to use this as an opportunity to punish all monkeys. Sounds like a cover up, conspiracy - we need some investigations! Maybe Fred is behind this? Someone get Woodward and Bernstein on this MonkeyGate scandal.

I enjoy traveling across borders and seeing the world -and reporting back to you my friends! Hopefully we can stop this madness and restore monkey rights and monkey equality!

I will be writing letters to Rob Bishop-R of Utah, Earl Blumenauer-D of Oregon, and Madeleine Bordallo-D of Guam (preview: Thumbs UP to Rob and Thumbs DOWN to the other two!).

Also Thumbs UP! to Jon Stewart of the Daily Show (see below) who brought this to the attention of the hip kids. - Thanks Jon and Rob!

P.S: Isn't there more important things going on that the US government should be concentrating on?

UPDATE: Travis Shooting

" The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers, one with a smoking gun, standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. The caption reads: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." "

OH NO! More News about Travis - and now this cartoon. This doesn't seem good for chimpanzees and monkeys. I'm still waiting for details on what really happened and what caused this tragedy. I'm happy to report that a full investigation has been launched.

A Monkey Story

Hi Everybody!

I recently saw a story about a chimp named Anjana who has been taking care of two White Tiger cubs in Miami named Mitra and Shiva. She has been taking care of them as a mother would after they were separated from their mother in South Carolina after Hurricane Hannah hit.

Good Job Anjana! You get MoJo's "Thumbs Up" Award of the week!
